ADM Bulgaria (formerly Amylum Bulgaria) has undertaken a significant modernization and expansion project at its corn processing facility in Razgrad, Bulgaria, transforming it into one of the largest grain processing plants in Southeastern Europe.
The modernization initiative, valued at over $123 million, commenced in 2018 and reached completion by the end of 2021. The primary objectives were to double the plant’s processing capacity and diversify its product portfolio. Key developments include:
- Ethanol Production: Construction of a new ethanol plant utilizing residual products from sweetener manufacturing, marking ADM’s entry into the green fuels market.
- Product Expansion: Enhanced production capabilities for liquid sweeteners (glucose, fructose, dextrose), crystalline dextrose, and starches, catering to the food, beverage, paper, packaging, and animal nutrition industries.
- Infrastructure Enhancements: Development of new facilities such as the Feed House (fiber and germ dewatering and drying), Gluten House (gluten dewatering and drying), and installation of a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system with a gas turbine and boilers.
Ludan Romania played a pivotal role in the project’s execution, providing comprehensive services including:
- Assessment of existing permits and technical documentation.
- Conceptual and detailed multidisciplinary design.
- Cost estimation for capital and operational expenditures (CAPEX & OPEX
- Support during the permitting process, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and building permits.
- Procurement assistance, construction supervision, and coordination
The project combined brownfield and greenfield approaches, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations and compliance with Bulgarian and EU regulations.
